Snowflake Challenges 4 & 5

Snowflake Challenge: A warmly light quaint street of shops at night with heavy snow falling.

Challenge #4: Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page: Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

I do (semi) regular link lists, and thought about dumping one here, but then I saw this video, and wanted to talk about it.

[youtube.com profile] lostrekkie / [youtube.com profile] jessiegenderafterdark5287: Starfleet Academy Is The Best Live-Action Star Trek We've Gotten In Years (Spoiler-Free Review) (Video: 43 minutes).
I braced for CW-core melodrama in space and instead got a Star Trek show that actually understands Star Trek.

Context on where I am with modern TV Star Trek, the TL;DR being: "Too old and tired to deal with this shit." I remember watching the first two episodes of Star Trek: Picard, and deciding, "I don't have the energy to be angry at Star Trek." Which was similar to how I felt about pretty much everything in January of 2020, to be fair. But the feeling specific to Star Trek has stuck, and I haven't kept up with any of the modern shows. We did watch part of the first season of Discovery, and I enjoyed later episodes more than my first impression of the pilot (which I loathed). But then I just never cared enough to go back to it.

I probably should've watched Prodigy, which was more my speed (it sounds like, being a Voyager girl growing up). Then I bounced off Lower Decks, both tonally and in animation style. And I felt the same sort of continuity exhaustion towards Strange New Worlds as I do towards all of Star Wars and most of the MCU at this point.

(For the reboot movies: Enjoyed the first one, have forgotten every single thing about the second one, adored the third one, but then Anton died, and they never made any more. Tentatively interested in whatever the reboot of the reboot will be.)

This looks like something I might enjoy! I hope it doesn't rely too much on continuity from season three of Discovery, but otherwise I like the cast, I'm willing to put up with overly-hormonal youth, and I'd just... it'd be nice not to be angry at Star Trek for a change.

A few quibbles with the video:
  • Not personal to me, but if you're loving the current era of Trek... Jessie very much is not, and may harsh your mellow.

  • It's probably not as spoiler free as some people use with that term, but it didn't really give away any plot details.

  • I basically listened to it as a podcast, because while I very much enjoy Jessie's face, there's a lot of b-roll that's just the trailers over and over? Which I guess is a youtube thing.

But overall I liked her video! I will be tuning in to the new show.

AND THEN I SAW THIS VIDEO, so you get some Raye, too.

Challenge #5: In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.
I'm not really active in transformative works fandom right now (brain full, no room), but here's a couple broad wishes for rainbow chasers.

1. Copying a bunch of people asking for help with [community profile] fandomtrees. There's lots of great trees that need a few more decorations <3

2. Tell me your favourite album last year. Not song, full album you can listen to end to end. The album doesn't have to have come out in 2025; it can be from another year, and it was just your favourite to listen to in 2025.

3. Tell me your favourite tiny detail about your blorbo, and why you like it. Don't worry if I know/like your canon. I just want to roll around in some fandom positivity. Alternately, a small joke or funny moment from your blorbo's show (or novel, or whatever).

E.g.: this is more of a canon beat, but the thing in "Mr. Rowl" where everyone keeps mistaking the heroine's dad for the Duke of Wellington cracks me up every time I think of it.

ETA: 4. If you use Discord, please go fill out this survey and tell them to put AI integration where the Sun will never see it: We're exploring how people feel about AI—tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Copilot—and what they'd want (or not want) from AI in Discord.

Snowflake Challenge 2026 - Day 5

Challenge #5

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.

Okay, let's give this one a whirl.

1. Heated Rivalry recs
- I've just finished watching Heated Rivalry, so I'd love some fic recs. Any rating, any length, and focused on any character(s). If you've read a HR story that you've enjoyed, let me know. A few words saying why you liked it would be great too, so I can tell if our tastes align.

2. Heated Rivalry icons - Continuing with the Heated Rivalry theme, some icons featuring any of the main characters would be very welcome.

3. Engagement with my fic
- Engagement with my fic in any form - comments, kudos, fanart, whatever - is always greatly appreciated.

4.Leave a comment and keep the fannish conversation going - I'd love it if anyone who reads this would take the time to leave a comment on the next fanwork that they enjoy. Maybe even on the next couple of fanworks that they enjoy, in fact. Fanworks are part of the fannish conversation. When someone creates something and puts it out there, they're opening a conversation about the canon. Engaging with it keeps the fannish conversation going, and helps keep fandom alive and vibrant - and that's something we all benefit from.

Survived the day

That meeting started too early and went way too long. That said it wasn't as awful as it could have been. We spent too much time on active shooter drills, not because it's not important but because we keep getting promised changes that never happen. This time I held up my work key chain that has over 30 keys. HOW am I going to find the right key fast enough to not get shot trying? I was told we can buy that bolt lock for the inside of the door if we want one...ME? Jesus.

There might be enough money to keep my building from falling in. That's good to know.

The new football coach seemed to be a cross between a tent revival preacher and someone honestly wanting to rehab our team (you know the one that's been here 1 year, lost half to expulsion for bad behavior and this is our third coach!)

The AI training went on too long. SO long. We're instructors. We KNOW the brain can't handle 2 hours of lecture.

Came home to no phone and no functioning cell phone (I have a land line because 90% of the time the cell doesn't work out here).

Then into the writer's zoom where I mostly did editing of the novel. Still hoping for beta readers for the Overlook short story.

And I'll do fannish fan recs tomorrow because then I had to fight with kickstarter about my pledge (still isn't done) and fight with United health care which still thinks I'm a member and well now I am again but it took forever to update everything.

Such a frustrating day.

Write Every day 2026: January, Day 9

[personal profile] candyheartsex assignments have arrived, and I got what I hoped I'd get!

In yesterday's poll, the majority of people work on one thing at a time when it's for a deadline, but on multiple things at once when it's not. Fascinating!

(Also, in tickyboxes, the majority said they'd tick whichever ones they like. More interestingly, 33,3% of respondents chose "tick them all", but only 11% actually did tick them all. *g*)

For me, I usually have multiple things going no matter what. When I'm in the very final phase of finishing a story, I need to focus on just that; otherwise, there may be a "main" thing I'm working on, but it's hardly ever the only thing. Creativity begets creativity, so the better the writing is going with one thing, the more ideas and snippets my brain produces for other things as well. *g*

Today's writing

Some more [community profile] fandomtrees, but also, I had a brainwave and wrote some snippets plus a bunch of notes for an original fic WIP I hadn't touched since 2018. I think my writing brain is starting to function properly again if it's randomly throwing out things like that!

One of the things I want to work on this year is unmasking. In general, but especially with my family. This tumblr post has some ways to start.

I thought I was starting today, actually, but while I expressed my emotions honestly, my family are not emotionally safe for me to be that vulnerable around, which is why I have been masking around them in the first place... today was hard because I'm grappling with the fact that these people who claim to love me and have affection for me, want me to stay quiet when someone in the family hurts me. They'll make excuses for the person who hurt me because they think it's okay for me to be hurt. When I love someone, I don't want them hurt. So I don't believe this is love, I don't understand this so-called familial love. Seems cultish to me.

It's in moments of realisation like these, when I brush against my family and leave with a bleeding gash, that I feel lonely despite having met friends very recently.

Unmasking has to go hand in hand with protecting myself and setting strong boundaries. Being 'radically visible' when it's not safe for you to be really seen by these people? Needs more thought.

This is giving me more ideas for why I am so parasocially fascinated by Yunho, the idol who does not want to be seen to feel safe. Maybe he reminds me of what I do on a daily basis to feel safe around my family. He's very performative and I don't have the energy for that, so I'm very avoidant.

I wonder if Yunho is lonely. Whether he ever wants to be honest and vulnerable. Maybe safety comes first for him.

What's Making Me Happy Today: Dimension 20 Gladlands

Between this and Flight of the Icaron, I'm being very well fed on the actual-play front this week.

Gladlands is the latest campaign from the folks at Dimension 20, a six-episode comedy about intentional community in a post-apocalyptic irradiated wasteland. The homebrew elements are fantastic and include an ability set consisting of Charm, Warmth, Creativity, Awareness, Resilience, and Determination (with the Warmth rolls being especially interesting in what might otherwise seem like low-stakes encounters) and a system for tracking the overall vibe. The first episode is ridiculous, inspiring, and includes a bit about cannibalism that made me laugh so hard I cried.

Write Every day 2026: January, Day 8

  • As usual (and as I hoped for), [community profile] fandomtrees has a one-week delay, so now I have a much better chance of finishing more than one thing, heh. Here is the latest admin post with the trees that still need gifts.

  • Also, [personal profile] candyheartsex sign-ups have closed, and three more people in my fandoms signed up after I had already gone to bed! Can't wait to find out what my actual assignment will be.

Today's writing

I worked a little on one [community profile] fandomtrees treat, started planning another, and did some brainstorming for [personal profile] candyheartsex. It's still all slower going than I'd like, but I'm feeling much better, so there's that.

We Lived in Drumfyvie by Margaret Lyford-Pike and Rosemary Sutcliff

Trying something a bit different for the annual Sutcliff this time.

We Lived in Drumfyvie (1975) is a series of short stories about the history of a fictional Scottish town (nothing to do with the real Fyvie in Aberdeenshire, setting of my favourite ballad), from its creation as a burgh by David I in the twelfth century to Victoria's Diamond Jubilee at the end of the nineteenth.

God, it's exhausting being Scottish, in't it? )
