2025 End-of-Year Writing Meme

I haven't done this meme in a few years, but I thought I'd do it again this year!

My writing year started out strong; then I crashed for a few weeks in March, and by the time I was recovering, it all fell into a ditch due to work-related lack of time and sheer exhaustion. July and August ended up my worst writing months since the start of WED. But I recovered toward the end of the year, even though work picked up again in November, so the end result was pretty good anyway!

Some statistics:

Total number of posted stories in 2025: 12 - one fewer than in 2024; I hope to write more things again in 2026!

Total word count (posted): 88,174 - about 18k more than 2024: while I wrote fewer stories, many more of them were on the longer side. In fact, this is the second-highest amount of words I've posted in a year, only beaten by 2018 with 97,933 words.

Total word count (written): 155,611 - about 6k more than 2024. The last time I wrote more than this was in 2018; I hope to get back there some day.

Highest monthly word count (posted): 30,631 (December) - almost 20k of this is due to [community profile] ficinabox reveals being delayed for three weeks; the rest is Yuletide.

Highest monthly word count (written): 57,548 (February) - my best writing month since I started keeping track in a spreadsheet back in 2014! Of course part of that was that I ditched my [community profile] highadrenalineexchange fic post-deadline and wrote something entirely new, LOL. Maybe it's no wonder that I fell into a slump after HA reveals in early March. *g*

Most words written in a day: 6,583 (1st March) - the final rush to the HA finish line!
Fewest words written in a day: 1 (9th September) - before my writing started to recover a bit towards the end of the month.

Months I actually posted fic: 6 - one fewer than 2024.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?

Mainly, I want to write more words than in 2025, finish more stories, and post fic in more months.

Write Every day 2026: January, Day 2

Welcome aboard WED, everyone! Glad to see you all here this month, may it be a great one for writing!

It snowed here last night! And unlike the previous time this winter, it was cold enough that the snow stayed on the ground. I really should have gone for a walk, but felt very lazy today and only went out briefly for groceries.

Yesterday's and today's writing

Yesterday, I only wrote a small snippet and made some notes - but they were important pieces: I figured out how to end my [community profile] fffx fic!

For this story, I had a great beginning and I knew some thing I wanted to have happen, but until yesterday I was completely unclear about how to end it. And I always struggle with writing when I don't know what I'm writing towards. I find it really hard to write without having an ending in mind! Now I know what I'm aiming for - the story still has a gaping hole in the middle, but now it's just about plotting a course from Point A to Point B. *g*

Today, I poked at various [community profile] fandomtrees things, but didn't really make much progress. Hopefully tomorrow will be more productive!

When I'm busy, I sometimes forget or just don't find any time/energy to write. So my strategy is to keep a physical notebook on my pillow so I'll be reminded when I go to bed.

The other thing that helps - because I do try to write every day, and don't want to break my streak - is to use alibi sentences with abandon. (Those are the sentences you write just so you can say you wrote something. No matter how short they are, they're still something - and enough of them in a chain can add up to considerably more. *g*)

Yuletide author reveals

Having read the book last Yuletide, I was delighted to match this year to [personal profile] kanna_ophelia on The School on the Moor, a really excellently femslashy girls' boarding school novel. This first fic was an idea I'd had floating around for a while, but which was improved by taking inspiration from [personal profile] kanna_ophelia's request and adding more pining:

The Applecleave Church Plate and Other Treasures (1944 words) by regshoe
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The School on the Moor - Dorita Fairlie Bruce
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Tabitha "Toby" Barrett/Dorinda Earle
Characters: Tabitha "Toby" Barrett, Dorinda Earle, Algernon Barrett
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Getting Together
Summary:

Another trip to the Blue Tor hut-circle.

And then I wrote another, completely new fic; I really wanted to do something with the Dartmoor setting, and dramatic schoolgirl adventures seemed a promising way to use it:

These Wild Affronting Hills (5686 words) by regshoe
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The School on the Moor - Dorita Fairlie Bruce
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Tabitha "Toby" Barrett/Dorinda Earle
Characters: Tabitha "Toby" Barrett, Dorinda Earle, Elfrida "Elfie" Rossall
Additional Tags: Rescue, Getting Together, Dartmoor
Summary:

Elfie Rossall runs into danger on the moor, and it's up to Toby and Dorinda to rescue her—together.

I've been watching a lot of reactions to Heated Rivalry lately (between rewatching the episodes themselves), and there's one scene in episode 6 that has some people losing their minds in stress and dismay and other people completely taking it in stride, and I've been fixating on why I fall into the latter group, so decided I should write about it. I'm not interested in writing fic about it, so thought I'd dust off my essay writing skills (such as they are).

“By far the dominant reason for not releasing sooner was a reluctance to trade the dream of success for the reality of feedback.” (Kent Beck, software engineer)

I find I do this a lot. I spend time "planning" or "gathering knowledge," often until I lose interest in the thing before ever actually trying to do the thing. While I recognize that this is often an attempt to try to avoid the awkward phase where I'm learning the thing and can't really help doing the thing badly, it's still hard to put that recognition into action. I don't really do new year's resolutions, but I'm trying right now to try to more actively recognize when I'm doing this and take action to stop myself from doing it. So, with that being said, I'm going to take the air-dry clay that I got for Christmas out of its package and go make some awkward looking sculpture!

My second Yuletide fic is a crossover! My recipient prompted for a Guardian crossover with Da Qing, so I included a tiny cameo in Heart-Seed, Heart-Flower - and then I couldn't resist writing more about what happened.

Because:
  • Da Qing is always so much fun to write!

  • I had a dragon! And Dragon City should have a dragon in its history, right?

  • And most importantly, my story was already about someone travelling realms and healing worlds with magic water/flowers, so naturally I had to have him do the same for Guardian and provide a fix-it there, too. *g*
(The story turned out very Guardian-heavy, so it's just as well that I didn't manage to finish it in time to put it in the main collection.)

Also, I have to share this because I used it for the fic, and it's very cool: Here is a time-lapse video of a cotton plant! It has white flowers, while the one in the story is yellow, but still. *g*

Yuletide Reveal

luthien: (Xmas: Yuletide)
[personal profile] luthien
This year I wrote a Georgette Heyer novel fandom - again. I seem to manage to get assigned Heyer approximately every second year, but since I never nominate any fandom once I've written it once, this was, again, a Heyer I'd never written fic for before.

Perspectives (14548 words) by Luthien
Chapters: 8/8
Fandom: The Nonesuch - Georgette Heyer, HEYER Georgette - Works
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Sir Waldo Hawkridge/Ancilla Trent
Characters: Ancilla Trent, Waldo Hawkridge, Tiffany Wield, Laurence Calver, Courtenay Underhill, Maria Docklow, Mrs Underhill, Mrs Burford, Julian Lord Lindeth, Lady Hawkridge, Reverend William Trent, Mrs Trent
Additional Tags: Regency, Historical, Post-Canon, POV Outsider, Kisses, Secrets, Spoilt Brats, Governesses, engagements, Weddings, Honeymoons, minor original characters, Inns, Bad Weather, country house parties, The Season, POV Multiple
Summary: What one sees, and how much, depends very much on one's perspective.

~*~

This time, the Heyer novel was The Nonesuch, which was the very last of Heyer's Regencies that I first read as a teenager, so it's always stuck in my mind for that reason. It took me several years to find a copy of it, back in the days before the worldwide web, when the local library, and a couple of local bookshops and secondhand bookstores, were my only sources for books.

I've always mostly preferred Heyer's novels with the more mature main characters than the ones with the ingenue heroines (with the exception of Hero in Friday's Child - because she's impossible not to love), so Waldo and Ancilla (despite their names *g*) have always worked well for me. I really enjoyed exploring them and their vibe through the perspectives of a bunch of different characters in this story. And of course The Nonesuch also features, in Tiffany Wield, one of the most gloriously terrible spoilt brats that I've ever encountered in fiction. I had particular fun with her perspective, and I think I managed to do her justice. My recipient liked it, anyway, and that's really all that matters in an exchange like this.

Roll on, next year.

Sliding in with one last [community profile] rec_cember post! Some canon divergent fics and vids I really loved reading/watching post-season 4:

End of the World Express by Electra_TUA (Electra_XT), Rated Mature, Diego/Lila/Five
In Diego’s defense, he didn’t expect the inter-dimensional terminal they were talking about to be a subway station.

The dialogue is so crisp and well-done. Scenarios with characters getting lost on the time subway is RIPE for fic. I loved the characterization of all three of them, but especially Diego, and how they all re-acquire their joy together by the end.

that would be okay by achilleees_tua, Rated Mature, Diego/Five
Six years, five months, and two days into his ill-advised solo subway adventure, Five finds a greenhouse full of strawberries.

Okay so maybe this isn't my usual ship, but I was craving even more subway fic and this fic delivers! So much introspection and even though Diego and Five know each other so well, they manage to get romantic and surprise each other.

Empty [Anniversary Video] by FanVids (JustBWilde), Lila/Five, *WARNING for fast flashing lights*

This summarizes the growth of their relationship so well. I like how the voice overs highlight how they started with white hot hatred towards each other - but then came all the way back around to hatred again with the way s4 ended. I think the main theme of the show is that time is a flat circle for Five. The tragedy of it all!!

✰Finally, this vid was posted in 2020 but it was new to me. It captures all of the Hargreeves' powers and their ride-or-die dynamic, plus the song is super fun:

A New Year

I'll be honest. I hold out very little hope for this year being better than last year. I did the Meriam Webster's thing on bluesky, you screenshot their gif and whatever word you get sets the tone for your year. I got moribund. Are you fucking kidding me? Why is that even a choice? Is it literally just spitting out every word in the dictionary.

But moribund feels right for the 2020s which if I'm continuing to be honest sucked donkey dong. 2020 - covid 2021- nearly lost my leg and took a year to learn to walk again 2022-23 weren't as horrid 24 - lost my uncle 25 - lost my last uncle. So while I'm hoping moribund is NOT my word of the year, it feels right.

Right about now is when I do my good things jar (okay usually it's next week when I get back to Ohio but I know what's in it) it has three things, presented my sabbatical research (at work and at my conference), got a story into an anthology (i'll give you that info tomorrow) and I went to an all inclusive resort for the first time in Mexico. Pretty slim pickings for good things. Mostly 2025 was me trying to not lose my sanity.

So resolutions? Eh, I don't really make them. I've given my writing goals. In addition to that I'd like to see if I can come up with lunches that don't spike my blood sugar, I'd like to get more active but what I need more than anything, a cleaning schedule for my home because this cannot go on as is.

I'm still thinking about doing [community profile] snowflake_challenge. I got really sideways with this challenge a couple years ago and lost my taste for it. But a lot of my list is doing it...sigh

But here, let me share some cool things about me and my writing

one of the first of probably several archive things I'll end up doing. Got this one from [personal profile] lucy_roman
from AO3

Total works on archive - 894

Works written in 2025 - 74

Longest fic written in 2025 The Porn Star Murders Hazbin Hotel

Fic with most bookmarks (also most hits and kudos)Hope is The Thing With Feathers The Owl House

Shortest fic - Needs Unmet Helluva Boss

And here are my writing stats. I have no complaints here: Original fic count 38,727
Fanfic count 359, 707 for a writing total of 398, 434. My only complaint is I wanted 50K of original fic. sigh.

Thanks to a few of the things on [personal profile] sholio's post today I have some community recs

[personal profile] candyheartsex a multifandom gift exchange with a low minimum and a focus on relationships, both platonic and romantic/sexual

[community profile] traumaticexperiences a (psychological) trauma themed multifandom exchange that will be run on Ao3. Matching will be done on fandom, relationship/solo character, and freeform. You must be 18+ to participate and maintain anonymity until creator reveals.

And one I'm actually in is [community profile] allbingo and I'm hosting, the public domain fest bingo. come join us.

And for anyone still on LJ and haven't backed up your old blog somewhere else the news is looking bleak. I haven't fully read up on it. I do crosspost there for the few friends who haven't joined me here on DW but it looks like Russia isn't playing games with it any more. You can check out more here on bluesky. and a bit more here on DW about the importing.

"Imagine the Angels of Bread" by Martín Espada

This is the year that squatters evict landlords,
gazing like admirals from the rail
of the roofdeck
or levitating hands in praise
of steam in the shower;
this is the year
that shawled refugees deport judges,
who stare at the floor
and their swollen feet
as files are stamped
with their destination;
this is the year that police revolvers,
stove-hot, blister the fingers
of raging cops,
and nightsticks splinter
in their palms;
this is the year that darkskinned men
lynched a century ago
return to sip coffee quietly
with the apologizing descendants
of their executioners.

This is the year that those
who swim the border's undertow
and shiver in boxcars
are greeted with trumpets and drums
at the first railroad crossing
on the other side;
this is the year that the hands
pulling tomatoes from the vine
uproot the deed to the earth that sprouts the vine,
the hands canning tomatoes
are named in the will
that owns the bedlam of the cannery;
this is the year that the eyes
stinging from the poison that purifies toilets
awaken at last to the sight of a rooster-loud hillside,
pilgrimage of immigrant birth;
this is the year that cockroaches
become extinct, that no doctor
finds a roach embedded
in the ear of an infant;
this is the year that the food stamps
of adolescent mothers
are auctioned like gold doubloons,
and no coin is given to buy machetes
for the next bouquet of severed heads
in coffee plantation country.

If the abolition of slave-manacles
began as a vision of hands without manacles,
then this is the year;
if the shutdown of extermination camps
began as imagination of a land
without barbed wire or the crematorium,
then this is the year;
if every rebellion begins with the idea
that conquerors on horseback
are not many-legged gods, that they too drown
if plunged in the river,
then this is the year.

So may every humiliated mouth,
teeth like desecrated headstones,
fill with the angels of bread.

This is the final tally! Let me know if you want to check in late or I missed you somewhere. [personal profile] trobadora is doing January, so head over there now. Good work everyone! \o/ I didn't manage to write on New Year's Eve, though I did successfully make soufflé for the first time--turns out it isn't difficult. But I did write on the 1st, more than an alibi sentence at least.

Now back home, which is a relief. Farm things done:
- Moving part of a pile of gravel from one place to another with a shovel and wheelbarrow (gravel is HEAVY).
- Pruning down the grapevine that was already here when we came. It's a Vitis labrusca 'Zilga', very hardy, but we only got one cluster of grapes on it this year (rather sour ones). But I think that was our fault for not pruning it in the summer, so it was just a mass of leaves.
- Pruning some wild hazel bushes into a vase shape which is supposed to make them yield more nuts.
- Feeding the ducks! And talking with the ducks! Awww, I've missed them.
- Making pickled beetroots.

Yuletide author reveals have happened! I had one story in the regular collection and one in the Madness collection this year.

For my main fic, I matched on a request that I'd been eyeing for some years - for Zhu Yilong's Thermos Flower Series commercials. (Here is a nearly-complete playlist, lacking only the lily of the valley one, though the first on the list is a bit atypical.)

There's only one regular character in this series of commercials, but there is also a white cat that appears in several. So those were the two characters I decided to write about:
  • Zhu Yilong's character, the man with the magical thermoses, who I decided is a dragon (with some canon support, given the little cartoon dragon on the thermoses :p), and whom I named Ao Xing (after the dragon kings of the four seas, who are all "Ao Something").

  • the white cat - I decided this is a cat spirit, called him Xiao-Bai, and gave him a human form that - no surprise - looks like Bai Yu. (This Bai Yu, to be precise, which I knew my recipient would appreciate. *g*)
I didn't tag this as "Bai Yu/Zhu Yilong Character Combinations", because it isn't that, and I didn't tag it as Guardian RPF, because it isn't that either, but it's still Guardian-adjacent and Weilan-adjacent, after all. *g*

And I had a complete blast with this, worldbuilding and all! Tying things like the magically appearing flower decorations on the thermoses into the worldbuilding, inventing flower worlds of my own, and of course developing the relationship between the two characters - it really was a lot of fun. :D

And I did a fun thing with the narrative voice where the beginning of each chapter starts in a more distant/mythic, omniscient voice and then zooms in on the POV character, which I hope worked well!

I think this one's completely readablewithout canon knowledge, btw. Hardly anyone has read it (it really is niche even for Yuletide), but I hope a few more people will give it a chance. I'm pretty proud of how it came out!

Snowflake Challenge: A mug of coffee or hot chocolate with a snowflake shaped gingerbread cookie perched on the rim sits nestled amidst a softly bunched blanket. A few dried orange slices sit next to it.

Almost everything I post on Dreamwidth is posted access-locked to my circle, but I am going to try to actually participate in [community profile] snowflake_challenge this year and maybe I can make it a habit to continue posting regularly. I'm making this post public for the duration of the challenge, but I might lock it after January. I'm slightly neurotic about leaving posts public even when they aren't very personal posts. One of the things I like about Dreamwidth is that I'm not that worried about a post going viral here. (I deleted my Tumblr years ago because that platform fed into my neurosis. If I posted something that didn't get much interaction, I'd be sulky about it because it felt like I was being ignored. But then I once posted something political that got a huge number of re-blogs and comments including, of course, from people who disagreed with me, and after that I decided that I preferred being ignored.)

Toad
she/her
In addition to [personal profile] oldtoadwoman , I have an art journal at [personal profile] eye_of_toad , but I haven't posted much this year at all. And I'm [archiveofourown.org profile] oldtoadwoman on Archive of Our Own (but haven't been active there in ages either). Real-life has really worn me down the last few years. I want to squee about fun things, but I'm often lacking the energy or focus to even post about what I've been watching lately.

Watched recently: Wake Up Dead Man (the latest Benoit Blanc mystery), season 1 of Pluribus, and I'm almost caught up on Stranger Things which I'm about to go finish now. And the on-hiatus show that I most want to see concluded is Severance. One annoying thing that stands out, is that I seem to keep getting hooked on things that get dragged out a bit too long with way too long of a gap between seasons. (I like the Benoit Blanc mysteries for being self-contained stories, but all the others try to drag you along for years' worth of cliffhangers.) And I've been going to the movie theater a lot lately. Most recently saw Song Sung Blue which I enjoyed. I've watched all of the variations of Ghosts with the exception of the Greek one, which I haven't found subtitled versions of yet. It started out as a silly sitcom that my sister liked, but for me the most entertaining part is seeing how each country adapts the story to their own culture and history. (My sister and I marathoned the French & Greek series over the holidays.)

I feel like I should be saying more as an introduction, but at the moment my interests are a bit scattered.

Some days I feel too contradictory to even have a personality. I like trying new food (but still go to my old favorites when I can't make a decision). I like going places and having new experiences (yet I often just curl up in my apartment and never see another human being all weekend). I love the idea of reading (but never seem to actually make time to sit down and read). I love to paint and draw (but always put it off until "later" when I'll have more time). I enjoy journaling and writing letters (but keep telling myself I'll catch back up tomorrow). I teach math (but have no guarantee that I'll be offered the same position next school year) and enjoy teaching (except for the 90% of the time when students are just goofing off and not listening at all). I love writing fan fiction (but almost never write anymore because I can't seem to stay focused on one story idea long enough).

I'm also extra prone to sulking in the winter so I'm going to try to use [community profile] snowflake_challenge as motivation to get up and actually type something regularly.
