Can't say I'm TOTALLY surprised, though. There was clearly less interest/funding from above for the second season, and that was reflected in things like the number of episodes and the less elaborate costuming.
*hugs* Sad indeed. We were finally able to see both seasons sometime last year when it finally was available, and TBH I wasn't as taken with it as I'd expected after what I'd heard about it. But I really enjoyed it and would have loved to see more of the series! *sigh*
Same here. I sometimes feel like we long since passed the "good time" of having decent shows and movies with a decent amount of seasons - or the story told to a good stopping point - also with a good middle ground of quality, execution and faithfull storyline (in the case it's based on books or other media).
I find myself spending a lot more time reading than viewing anymore. In fact, I mostly watch something when I'm on the exercise equipment. It's great for my Goodreads annual goal but also makes me sad. I can't seem to find a show to get totally invested in, and I realized only the other day that I didn't write a single word of fanfiction in 2023.
As a huge Black Sails fan, when I first heard "gay pirate show," I thought it would be something similar, and of course, it's totally different, but I loved it for its boldness and its complexity and its inclusiveness and the sheer zany joy of some of it (while also hitting me right in the heart on many occasions). *sighs*
I still lurk on the app formerly known as Twitter, which is where I saw the news, but I didn't want to talk about it with strangers, so I came to DW, which is less-than-strangers. :-). Thank you for sharing the sadness with me.
Yes, you're right, of course, that the network had already indicated its lack of confidence in the show, which is just too bad, given that the creator had a three-year arc in mind anyway and just wanted to tell the rest of the story. *sighs*
*hugs* I'm sorry. My sadness has been double-edged, because season 2 broke my heart in a bad way and I'm both mourning the show being cancelled and still mourning that the show ultimately wasn't what I wanted/needed it to be. But I really was hoping, for the fans who still loved it, and for the actors and writers who wanted to come back, that they would have their shot with season 3.
I understand where you're coming from and appreciate your graciousness regarding its cancellation. I'm sorry it broke your heart in S2 and didn't seem to offer a possibility of redemption, even had there been a third season. :-( *hugs*
At the end of the day, it could only make me feel that hurt because I had loved and responded to it so much, and so I completely understand how those who were excited for a third season must feel. I'm crossing my fingers for the long shot that another company picks it up, and I'm hoping that even if that doesn't happen, we can all be sad together for a little while and then do what fandom does best in terms of carrying on and making new things to share our love.
If you ever want a positivity-only ear to talk about what you loved about the show or what you were hoping to see in season 3, I'm very much here for that.
I am just now crawling out from under my rock and saw this post.
That's so sad. That show was such fun.
I find myself wishing more shows would just embrace a single season arc. (Some stories might be better told in 3 or 4 or 5 seasons, but surely some stories can be told well in just one.) You simply can't count on any of the networks fully funding a complete story otherwise. I've seen so many shows canceled at the worst point.
