Can't say I'm TOTALLY surprised, though. There was clearly less interest/funding from above for the second season, and that was reflected in things like the number of episodes and the less elaborate costuming.
Yes, you're right, of course, that the network had already indicated its lack of confidence in the show, which is just too bad, given that the creator had a three-year arc in mind anyway and just wanted to tell the rest of the story. *sighs*
